A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
