Between them, they have secured some of the surprising successes, suffered some of the ugliest dismissals, made some of the most improbable hundreds, and secured some of the most surprising exceptional bowling spells in the records of the English game.

However this historic contest concludes, they have been, in turn, incredible, unbelievable, unconventional, frustrating, and completely, unrepentantly, boldly entertaining.
