In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
